Calibration after windshield replacement
Windshield replacement is the single most common reason a vehicle needs ADAS calibration. On a camera-equipped vehicle, the two are not separate jobs — the replacement is not finished until the camera is back to specification.
What happens to the camera during a replacement
On most ADAS-equipped vehicles the forward-facing camera is mounted to a bracket bonded to the windshield, behind the mirror. To remove the glass, the camera is unplugged and taken off its bracket. After the new glass is installed, the camera is remounted and reconnected.
That remount is the problem. The camera does not return to precisely the position it left, and the new glass is not optically identical to the old glass — thickness, curvature, and the properties of the bracket area all vary within manufacturing tolerance. The camera is now looking through a slightly different window from a slightly different place, and it does not know that.
Why a few millimetres matter
Alignment error at the camera multiplies with distance. A sensor out by a small amount at the windshield is out by a large amount at the range where the system is making decisions — the distance at which automatic emergency braking judges a closing speed, or lane keeping judges where the lane edge is.
The failure mode that concerns technicians is not the system throwing an obvious error. It is the system continuing to operate, appearing normal, and being confidently wrong.
Which systems are affected
Any feature that depends on the forward camera, which on most modern vehicles includes lane departure warning and lane keeping assist, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, traffic sign recognition, and automatic high beam control. Adaptive cruise control may depend on the camera, the forward radar, or both.
ADAS has been a broadly standard safety feature on vehicles from roughly model year 2016 onward, and coverage has widened every year since.
What a complete job looks like
- Pre-repair diagnostic scan. I-CAR guidance and multiple OEM position statements call for a diagnostic scan before glass, collision, electrical, or module work on an ADAS-equipped vehicle, so that pre-existing faults are documented rather than inherited.
- Glass replacement, with the manufacturer's safe drive-away time observed before the vehicle is moved.
- Calibration — static, dynamic, or both, as the manufacturer specifies for that exact vehicle.
- Post-repair scan and documentation, confirming the calibration completed and no faults remain.
That documentation is not paperwork for its own sake. It is the record that the safety system was returned to specification, and it is what your insurer and any future owner will want to see.
My windshield was replaced and nobody calibrated it
This is common, and it is fixable. Not every glass installer is equipped for calibration — it requires different tooling, OEM procedure access, and in the case of static work, a controlled space. Many installers replace the glass and leave the calibration to someone else, and some do not mention it at all.
If your glass was replaced and no calibration was performed, the camera should be calibrated before you rely on the system. We do this as standalone work, we come to the vehicle, and we do not need to have done the glass.

Common questions
Frequently asked
Do I need calibration after a windshield replacement?
If the vehicle has a windshield-mounted ADAS camera, yes. The camera is removed and remounted during replacement and does not return to exactly its previous position, and the new glass is not optically identical to the old glass.
What if my installer replaced the glass but did not calibrate?
The camera should be calibrated before you rely on the system. Calibration can be performed as standalone work by a specialist afterwards; the same company does not have to have replaced the glass.
Which features stop working correctly without calibration?
Any feature depending on the forward camera, typically lane departure warning and lane keeping assist, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, traffic sign recognition, and automatic high beams.
Will a warning light tell me the camera is misaligned?
Not reliably. A miscalibrated camera often produces no warning at all. The system continues operating on incorrect reference data, which is what makes it dangerous.
Does a chip repair require calibration?
Repairs that do not remove the glass or disturb the camera generally do not require calibration. Any work that removes the windshield or detaches the camera does.
