Does insurance cover ADAS calibration?

In most cases calibration is billed as part of completing the glass work correctly rather than as an optional extra — because on an ADAS-equipped vehicle it is not optional. Coverage still depends on your policy and your state.

The general position

Where a windshield replacement is a covered loss, the calibration required to return the vehicle's safety systems to manufacturer specification is normally handled as part of that repair. The reasoning is straightforward: a replacement that leaves the forward camera uncalibrated has not restored the vehicle to its pre-loss condition, which is the standard the repair is measured against.

What varies is the detail — your deductible, whether your state has specific glass coverage provisions, the terms of your particular policy, and whether the carrier has a network arrangement in place.

What we accept

We work with all insurance carriers. We are not restricted to a network, which matters more than it sounds: you generally have the right to choose who performs the work on your vehicle, and a network referral is a suggestion rather than an instruction.

What documentation carriers expect

A calibration line item is far less likely to be questioned when the file contains evidence rather than an assertion. A complete file generally includes:

  • The pre-repair diagnostic scan, documenting the vehicle's fault status before work began.
  • The OEM procedure reference establishing that this vehicle requires calibration and which type — static, dynamic, or both.
  • The calibration record itself, confirming the procedure completed successfully.
  • The post-repair scan, confirming no faults remain.

We produce this documentation as standard on every calibration, and we provide it to the vehicle owner and to the shop or carrier as required. It is the difference between a defensible invoice and an argument.

If a calibration line is questioned

The usual objections have factual answers. The claim that the vehicle will recalibrate itself over time is not correct — no current vehicle system can calibrate itself, and once a sensor is disturbed the vehicle cannot restore its own alignment. The claim that no warning light means no problem is also not correct, because a miscalibrated camera frequently produces no warning while operating on incorrect reference data.

Where a procedure is required by the manufacturer, that requirement is documented in the OEM service information, and citing it directly resolves most disputes.

For auto glass shops and collision shops

If you are billing calibration as a sublet line, the documentation above is what makes it stick. We supply the full record with every job, invoiced so it can be attached directly to the file. See working with us as an installer.

Before you assume you are covered

Check your policy or call your carrier — we can tell you what your vehicle requires and what it costs, but we cannot tell you what your specific policy covers. Call 1-866-682-0777 or request a free quote, and you will have the figures you need before you make the call.

Common questions

Frequently asked

Does car insurance cover ADAS calibration?

In most cases where the windshield replacement itself is a covered loss, the required calibration is handled as part of that repair, because a replacement that leaves the camera uncalibrated has not returned the vehicle to its pre-loss condition. Coverage still depends on your policy and your state.

Do you accept all insurance?

Yes. We work with all carriers and are not restricted to a single network.

Can my insurer require me to use their shop?

You generally have the right to choose who performs work on your vehicle. A network referral is a suggestion rather than a requirement.

What documentation proves the calibration was done?

A complete file includes the pre-repair diagnostic scan, the OEM procedure reference showing calibration is required, the calibration record itself, and the post-repair scan confirming no faults remain. We provide all four as standard.

What if the carrier says the car will recalibrate itself?

That is not correct. No current vehicle system can calibrate itself, and once a sensor has been disrupted the vehicle cannot restore its own alignment through normal driving.
