Hyundai ADAS calibration requirements
Hyundai SmartSense depends on a forward-facing camera mounted to the windshield behind the rearview mirror. Replace or remove the glass and that camera's reference to the road changes, which is why calibration is part of the repair rather than an upsell after it.
What Hyundai SmartSense is
Hyundai SmartSense is Hyundai’s name for its driver-assistance suite. Not every feature in it looks through the windshield — blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are usually radar, mounted at the corners of the vehicle, and glass work does not disturb them. The features below are the ones that do depend on the camera behind your windshield.
SmartSense rolled out model by model rather than on one fleet-wide date. It became increasingly standard from roughly the 2020 model year, varying by model and trim — so the presence of SmartSense features is a question about your specific vehicle, not about the badge.
Which features depend on the windshield camera
- Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with pedestrian detection
- Lane Keeping Assist and Lane Following Assist
- Smart Cruise Control on many models
- High Beam Assist
If your vehicle has any of these, the camera behind the glass is a safety component, and moving the glass moves the component.
Static or dynamic: what Hyundai requires
Typically static
Typically a static, target-based procedure, with some models and procedures also requiring a dynamic drive. We could not source that to Hyundai's own service information — the sources outside Hyundai conflict — so treat it as the general shape rather than a rule, and expect the procedure for your vehicle to come from Hyundai service information.
What Hyundai has published
Hyundai has published collision position statements covering ADAS and calibration requirements. We have not verified a glass-replacement-specific statement, so we do not cite one by name.
Position statements matter more than they sound like they should. When an insurer or a shop questions whether calibration was necessary, a manufacturer statement is the document that settles it.
How we handle a Hyundai
We work from Hyundai service information for your specific vehicle rather than from a generic procedure, we carry static target equipment as well as the ability to run a dynamic drive cycle, and we document the calibration so you have proof it was completed to specification. We come to the vehicle — the calibration happens where the car is.
If you are a glass or collision shop and a Hyundai is on your schedule, this is exactly the work other shops sublet to us. See how the installer partnership works.
Sources
Everything above traces to a document. Where we could not find one, we said so rather than filling the gap.
Common questions
Frequently asked
Is Hyundai calibration static or dynamic?
Typically a static target-based procedure, and some models or procedures also require a dynamic drive. The definitive answer for a given vehicle comes from Hyundai service information.
Does every Hyundai with SmartSense need calibration after glass replacement?
If the vehicle has a windshield-mounted forward camera, recalibration is part of a correct repair. We do not state it as a blanket rule for every SmartSense vehicle, because we could not source that claim to Hyundai.
