Volkswagen ADAS calibration requirements
Front Assist and Lane Assist depends on the front camera for driver assist systems — VW designates it R242 — mounted at the top of the windshield. Replace or remove the glass and that camera's reference to the road changes, which is why calibration is part of the repair rather than an upsell after it.
What Front Assist and Lane Assist is
Front Assist and Lane Assist is Volkswagen’s name for its driver-assistance suite. Not every feature in it looks through the windshield — blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are usually radar, mounted at the corners of the vehicle, and glass work does not disturb them. The features below are the ones that do depend on the camera behind your windshield.
We do not publish a model year at which Front Assist and Lane Assist became standard across the lineup, because we could not source that claim to Volkswagen. Availability varies by model and trim, so the question is about your specific vehicle.

Static or dynamic: what Volkswagen requires
Typically static
Volkswagen service documentation for the Golf describes a static, target-board procedure: the vehicle is positioned on an alignment platform and the camera is calibrated against a board held by VW's dedicated setting device, with the manual stating that calibration of the front camera is only permitted using that equipment. Recalibration is required when the windshield has been renewed or removed. We are quoting the Golf manual specifically and we are not going to extrapolate it across every VW model and year — the exact requirement for your vehicle comes from VW service information for that model. Note also that VW's procedure is tied to VW's own tooling, which is a real constraint rather than a branding preference.
What Volkswagen has published
I-CAR's summary of Volkswagen glass replacement requirements states that the forward-facing camera will need to be calibrated for the lane keep assist system to function properly, and that Volkswagen specifies its own product line of cleaning solution, adhesive, activator and primer for bonded glass, along with a list of required special tools.
Position statements matter more than they sound like they should. When an insurer or a shop questions whether calibration was necessary, a manufacturer statement is the document that settles it.
VW is specific about materials, not just procedure
Most manufacturers specify the calibration. Volkswagen also specifies the consumables — its own cleaning solution, adhesive, activator and primer for bonded glass — and requires particular workshop equipment. A VW glass job done with generic materials has departed from the manufacturer's procedure before calibration is even reached, and the rain/light sensor has its own condition: no embedded objects or bubbles between the sensor and its connecting pad.
