Windshield replacements are very common in the automotive industry. From rocks and pebbles to gravel, there are several ways windshields can get cracked or shattered while on the road. If not repaired or replaced in a timely manner, you are risking being pulled over or even getting into an accident. With this in mind, cars with ADAS may also require camera calibration after windshield replacements. In fact, a Nova Scotia man recently had his windshield repaired. However, the shop — that replaced his windshield — did not do enough to make the safety hazards of non-calibration clear to him. Therefore, he feels he was placed in danger.

Camera Calibration with Windshield Replacement

The CBN.ca news network recently picked up on this important story. Read the entire story here. In fact, Mike Ash of Conception Bay, Newfoundland — also had his windshield repaired as well. However, he felt as if the steering wheel was pulling him into oncoming traffic. This only shows that windshield replacement without calibration is very dangerous for drivers. Ash also mentioned that the shop never said anything about ADAS camera calibration with windshield replacement. While the technicians surely identified the camera, they did not explain to him that collisions may occur if the camera is not properly re-calibrated.

Read the Fine Print

Based on the recent situations, most windshield repair shops have disclaimers in their invoices or customer estimates — correspondences. These are designed to release the shops — and their franchises — from liability or damages. However, it is important for you to read the fine print pertaining to the need for camera calibration with windshield replacement. You also need to ask direct question about this to the technicians that are replacing your windshields. Only then can you be fully secured across the board — and the fault will fall on the company in question.

You can also contact the Auto Glass Safety Council (AGSC) for matters related to windshield replacement and camera recalibration. They are the governing body for these issues — and recently amended the current Automotive Glass Replacement Safety Standard (AGRSS) protocols. This includes the dealing with ADAS systems related to glass and windshield replacement jobs.
